Family Portrait – The Chau Family

A long time friend of mine, Serene, got married over the weekend. Serene’s family came over to Perth from all over the world to attend her weddding. Her parents flew over from Malaysia whilst her brother and his family flew over from the California.
She asked me to shoot a family portrait session 3 days before the wedding day, so she would not need to allocate more time in an already tight schedule on the actual day. I was also her official wedding photographer, so it was all easy for both of us to arrange for the portrait session.

We did the session at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in the late afternoon. The daylight saving time gave us plenty of good light for the entire session. UWA is a well-liked place for photographers. With its vintage architecture, great limestone walls, and beautiful sunken garden, the location is perfect for family portraits and weddings alike (I actually shot Serene’s wedding at UWA 3 days later).

The Chau Family

Shot just outside the Administration Office, the limestone pillars and beautiful background set the tone for the beautiful family portrait.

The Chau Family at the Sunken Garden

The sunken garden is a romantic and beautiful area favourited by many bridal couples. It also gave us great setup for the family portrait.

A young family

Here Serene’s sister had her family portrait taken as well. I love her children. They are just so adorable.

Family portraits do not have to be an all serious looking, all sitting down affair. Serene, her then fianc√© Benny, her sister and brother-in-law were certainly up for some fun…
If you say jump, they say "how high"

A family portrait of a different sort

Well, her brother and his wife were also up for some playtime, grabbing their boy by the legs and turning him upside down!

Children are often the center of family portraits. I love capturing them at their nature selves rather than forcing them to pose. Often the fleeting moments where they interact with their parents or other kids can produce some of the best images. Here are some of the photos that I really like

It was certainly fun doing the family portrait session for Serene and her family. I am now working on processing her wedding day photos and shall post some up in the near future.

Serene and Benny… congratulations on your wedding. Thanks for sharing your big day with me in such a special way.
